"Water and Words"

It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us.
Now nearly all those I loved and did not understand when I was young are dead, but I still reach out to them...
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.  The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops.  Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
     I am haunted by waters.
Norman Maclean, from A River Runs Through It

This new series of nine quilted fabric collages was inspired by the writing of Norman Maclean. His words made me think about how difficult it can be to communicate with the people we care about most and I chose to use the ever-moving river, stumbling over rocks, as a metaphor for conversation and communication.  I chose to work in a range of blue hues that I associate with water and perceive as calming and soothing.  I hand-dyed all the surface fabric using a combination of screen printing, mono-printing and stamping.  I then used hand sewing and machine stitching to connect the three layers of each quilted collage.
